Hi. firstly thank you for visiting my site. My name is Mark Thirlwell I am a contemporary artist working based in the north east of England. I produce Paintings, drawings and Prints. My work is grounded in direct engagement with the subject. Art for me is an act of sensing as much as seeing. I work primarily in oils, mixing suggested detail with more gestural abstracted forms and mark-making.

 I hold a First Class BA Honours degree in Fine Art from Sunderland University, I gained a PGC toward an MA before redirecting my efforts into full time studio practice.

Since my university study my work has entered private collections across the U.K and internationally' A number of collectors return to the work repeatedly which I value deeply.

My influences are varied, ranging from Rembrandt to Bacon, Eardley to Auerbach - painters who explore the tensions between environment, gesture and emotional presence.
